Ronan was born on 28 September 1983 in Dublin, Ireland to Geraldine and Hugh Rodham. Her father worked as a school teacher, while her mother was an artist. Ronan’s family moved from Gorey to Dalkey when she was five years old; her parents divorced when she was eight years old. She attended Gonzaga College of Education with the intention of becoming a teacher but after moving back home due to financial reasons she started working at Dublin City Council’s Arts Department instead.
In 2005 Ronan won one of three “Best Actress” awards at Cannes Film Festival for her role as Aisling Ní Raghallaigh in Steve McQueen’s Hunger which also won best film honours.
