CGTN was created in 2016, and Liu Xin returned to China that year. In 2017, she started hosting a show called The Point with Liu Xin where she shares her opinions.
In 2019, she complained about how Trish Regan from Fox News was covering the US-China Trade Conflict, saying it was more about feelings and less about facts. Later, Regan asked Liu to argue about it on her show. A story on Reuters before the debate said that China and the United States will have a big argument about their growing trade disagreement.
The discussion became very popular in China. Many people watched and commented on the debate on Sina Weibo, a micro-blogging site. The posts about the debate received 260 million views and over 53,000 comments. The discussion was later called “respectful, boring, and patronizing” in a news report.

Liu was born in a city called Zhenjiang in the Jiangsu province of China. She went to Nanjing University, which is one of the best universities in China, from 1993 to 1997. She studied English language and literature as her main subject. In 2011, she went to work in Geneva for almost six years as the head of CCTV’s office there.
In 1996, Liu was the first Chinese student to take part in and win the International Public Speaking Competition in London. After finishing college, she joined CCTV and eventually became a news presenter on the English language channel.
