Hywel Teifi Edwards was born on 18 August 1961 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales. Welsh-speaking family raised him, he grew up in Llangennech, near Llanelli from the age of four.
His father Hywel Teifi Edwards was a Welsh language activist, author, and an academic research professor of Welsh-language Literature at University College, Swansea. Aerona Protheroe (mother) was a teacher at Llanelli’s Ysgol Gyfun Y trade for 30 years.

He went to Llanelli Boys Grammer School. Edwards graduated with a first-class honors degree in French from Cardiff University College in 1983. He worked at a local radio station as a reporter for Swansea Sound before joining BBC as a news trainee in 1984.

After spending a short time working at Swansea Sound Edwards joined BBC in 1984. In 1986 he upgraded to BBC Wales parliamentary correspondent. He presents “how long BBC News” at Five, BBC News at One, BBC News weekend News, and Daily Politics. Edwards covered the wedding of royal prince William and Catherine Middleton, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. He also covered the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry including the funeral of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Edwards was the lead presenter for the United States 2019 general election coverage that took place on 12 and 13 December. Edwards presented BBC Six O’clock News between May 1999 and January 2003. It was the most popular and watched the programme. January 2003 was the year he joined BBC Ten O’clock News on BBC One as the presenter.
