Career
In 1981, he started working as a reporter for Global Ontario after graduation. He left to serve as the legislative correspondent for CTV in 1986. Newman then joined CBC Television in 1988 as a reporter and anchor, where he hosted Midday from 1992 to 1994.
He filled in as a backup anchor on The National. In 1994, Newman started working at ABC News in the United States. He was the main news presenter for ABC World News Now until 1996. He also hosted ABC World News This Morning and reported for World News Tonight.
In June 1997, ABC News chose Newman to be the newsreader for Good Morning America when Elizabeth Vargas left. In May 1998, he started working as a co-host on Good Morning America with Lisa McRee.
The show wasn’t doing well, and the two hosts, McRee and Newman, were given different jobs within ABC in January 1999. Newman started reporting for Nightline and filling in as an anchor for World News Tonight. Newman was the main reporter for the news about Princess Diana’s death.
From 2001 to 2010, he was the chief anchor and executive editor of Global National. In August 2014, he became a substitute anchor of CTV National News with Lisa LaFlamme, and in September 2016, he was named host and managing editor of the weekly investigative program W5.
