Teddy Atlas started working at ESPN in September 1998. He became a ringside analyst for ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, a show that started on October 3, 1998 and airs every week.

Atlas grew up in a rich part of Staten Island, New York City. His dad was a doctor. His mother, Mary Riley Atlas, used to be in a beauty competition called Miss America and also worked as a model. Atlas grew up following his mother’s Catholic beliefs and during summers, he would visit his family’s friends in Spring Lake, New Jersey.

According to him, Atlas had a bit of a difficult and rebellious childhood. He left school without finishing and got arrested multiple times.

He was involved in a violent theft and was sent to Rikers Island. Atlas got into a fight on a street in Stapleton, Staten Island. During the fight, someone used a knife with the name “007” on it to slash Atlas’ face really badly. The doctor used 400 stitches to close the wound. 200 stitches were on the outside of his face and 200 were on the inside. The attack caused him to have a noticeable scar.

He helped Willem DeFoe prepare for his role as a fighter in the movie “Triumph of the Spirit. ” Atlas also arranged and performed fight scenes in the film. He also directed the fight scenes for the TV show Against The Law and acted in the HBO movie “Only in America”, which was about the life of Don King.
