Merrick’s first big TV role was in 2011 when he appeared as part of the cast of the E4 drama Skins. Merrick originally auditioned in Bristol for the part of Rich Hardbeck and despite being offered it he was considered to be too happy and open-minded so he was cast as Alo Creevey. Alo was a popular character and was portrayed by Merrick with humor and warmth.
Finally, in February 2012, Merrick was recognized for his impressive work when he won the prestigious Royal Television Society Award for Best Actor. Merrick beat off competition from his Skins co-star, Dakota Blue Richards to be presented with the award. This was seen to be one of the high points of his career so far and proved what a talented actor he was, as he was nominated for other awards for his work in Skins.
After Skins, Merrick was still working steadily on the small screen. In May 2012, he starred in the British sitcom In with the Flynns in the role of Dean. Later in the year he was also cast in the romantic comedy film About Time as the character Jay.
This is less than two years after Merrick appeared in six different TV shows, and in 2013 he had got his foot in the door in even more. He appeared in Doctor Who as Brains, in the popular series Coming Up, and as a guest star in Atlantis. He played the legendary snooker player Steve Davis in the 2016 BBC dramatization The Rack Pack, having to perfectly portray an actual person in a way that would be convincing to viewers. In 2016, he also played Russell, butcher‘s apprentice, in the ITV drama Brief Encounters. Arthur Solway, in two episodes of the BBC period drama Poldark.
Between 2019 and 2021, Merrick appeared in the sitcom Dead Pixels playing Nicky, who was a super-keen video-gamer. This role would have been a good reflection of Merrick’s slapstick comedy skills but also his understanding of mainstream contemporary comedy and audience.
The sitcom had positive reviews and noted Merrick’s Nicky for his comic timing. His character was credited for giving Dead Pixels its humor, with the experience of the game that Merrick’s Nicky had received.
