Rostam Azizi

Rostam Abdulrasul Azizi is a Tanzanian billionaire businessman, economist, investor, and former politician born on August 21, 1960, in Tabora Region, Tanzania. He comes from a wealthy family of Iranian Baloch ancestry with a history in trading.

Azizi started in his family’s trading business before branching out independently, building a diverse portfolio in sectors like telecommunications (e.g., former stakes in Vodacom Tanzania sold for hundreds of millions), energy (Taifa Gas Group), mining (Caspian Mining), agriculture, real estate (in Dubai and Oman), port facilities, and media.

He entered politics at age 26, serving as a Member of Parliament for Igunga constituency from 1994 to 2011 under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, where he also held roles like National Treasurer (2005–2007) and Central Committee member (2006–2011). During his tenure, he focused on community initiatives like health insurance, water access, dispensaries, and electricity in his area. He resigned from politics in 2011 amid internal party issues.

Media Business Venture

In the media sector, Azizi initially invested in 1999 by partnering with Ambassador Ferdnand Kamuntu Ruhinda to found Mwananchi Communication Company Limited. They then collaborated with Kenya-based Nation Media Group (NMG), owned by the Aga Khan, to launch the English-language daily newspaper The Citizen in Tanzania.
This partnership effectively involved Azizi acquiring stakes in Mwananchi Communications, which became the vehicle for The Citizen and integrated with NMG’s operations (Mwananchi is now an NMG subsidiary).
The investment allowed Azizi to enter Tanzania’s media market, expand his business influence. This potentially leverage media for political and economic goals—such as supporting his close friend Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete’s successful 2005 presidential campaign. Azizi managed.
However, a disagreement arose over NMG’s coverage of Kikwete’s campaign, leading Azizi to sell a large portion of his Mwananchi stakes in 2006.
He then redirected funds to buy out stakes from several journalists in Habari Corporation Limited, renaming it New Habari Corporation (2006) Limited, which owns the Swahili newspaper Mtanzania.

Azizi’s initial purchase of shares tied to NMG appears driven by opportunistic business expansion into media, capitalizing on regional partnerships to build a new outlet in Tanzania’s growing press landscape.
