When Brown joined Independent Radio News in 1986, he began reporting important issues, such as the Hungerford Massacre and superpower summits. Two years later, he began working for BBC TV News, and from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, he covered the Gulf War and the fall of the Berlin Wall as a Foreign Affairs Correspondent up until 1991.

He was assigned Moscow Correspondent in 1991, and while there, he saw Mikhail Gorbachev’s downfall and the eventual collapse of Communism. Ben received numerous accolades for his reporting on the conflict, including the Golden Nymph Award from the Monte-Carlo Television Festival and the Bayeux War Correspondent of the Year Award.

Field Work

Brown participated in the Iraq War with British forces more recently, in 2003. In his book, The War for Iraq, he detailed his experiences, including the British soldier who saved his life by firing on an Iraqi militiaman who was going to shoot Ben in the back with a rocket-propelled grenade. In 1991, Brown covered the first Gulf War, and All Necessary Means, his account of it, was also released.
