Cate Blanchett was born on 14 May 1969 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Her full name is Catherine Elise Blanchett. She is of English, Scottish, and remote French descent. Her father, Robert DeWitt Blanchett, Jr., was a former United States Navy petty officer who died of a heart attack when she was 10. Her mother, June (née Gamble), is a property developer and teacher. She has a brother, Bob, who is a computer system engineer, and a sister, Genevieve, who is a theatrical designer.

Cate Blanchett attended Ivanhoe East Primary School, Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School, and Methodist Ladies’ College in Melbourne. She graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in New South Wales with a degree in fine arts in 1992. She also briefly studied at the University of Melbourne.

Cate Blanchett made her film debut in 1997 in the Australian drama Police Rescue.
