Cheng Lei is a Chinese-born Australian television news anchor and business reporter. Lei was conceived in 1975. She presented the Global Business show that airs on CGTN and was a renowned news anchor for the Chinese state-owned English-language news channel China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Beijing from 2012 until 2020. She had previously served as a China reporter for CNBC for nine years.

Marise Payne revealed in February 2021 that Cheng had been formally detained in China “on suspicion of selling state secrets unlawfully outside.” Cheng was taken into custody in August 2020 and then arrested on February 5, 2021.
