Hennig was born in Metairie, Louisiana, in 1987 to Cathy Distefano Gosset and Glenn H. Hennig Senior Her dad comes from Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, and England, and her mom comes from Italy. She has two big brothers, Glenn Jr. and Brad, who passed away in a car crash in 2001.
Hennig began her career in beauty contests and won the titles of Miss Louisiana Teen USA 2004 and Miss Teen USA 2004. She was the first person from Louisiana to win a national title since 1996.
She won a prize which included a one-year contract to be a model with Trump Modeling Management and a scholarship to study at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. Hennig also helped nonprofit groups and appeared on the TV show Passions.

Hennig made her acting debut in 2007 as Stephanie Johnson on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives.
She quit the show in 2011 after being nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards for her work. In 2017, she made a brief comeback.
From 2011 to 2012, she also portrayed Diana Meade in the CW supernatural drama series The Secret Circle. Her role as Malia Tate in the MTV supernatural drama series Teen Wolf, which aired from 2014 to 2017, helped her become more well-known. For the part, she was honored with a 2016 Teen Choice Award.
Hennig has also appeared in several films, such as Ouija (2014), Unfriended (2014), When We First Met (2018), and The After Party (2018).
