W Kamau Bell is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and television host. He began his career as a writer for The Chris Rock Show on HBO. Later he began performing stand-up comedy around the country and eventually became a regular on the Def Comedy Jam tour. When asked about his vocal style in an interview with The A.V. Club he said that “I have this voice that sounds like something out of an old SNL sketch.”

Kamau Bell is the great-grandson of a woman who was the first African American woman to graduate from UC Berkeley. His mother, Lucia Freeman, was also an activist and teacher. She died when he was 9 years old, leaving him with many questions about being raised by women in his household.

His grandmother Gladys took care of him after his mother passed away but left soon after he turned 11 because she could not afford housing in Oakland (a city where many people live below the poverty line). He says that she taught him everything she knew about civil rights activism while growing up: “She made sure that we went to marches and rallies when we were younger,” says Bell.” We went on bus rides together where she would tell us stories about how much discrimination there was against black people back then.”
