Padilla received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Alex Padilla began his political career in 1999 when he was elected to the Los Angeles City Council, representing the 7th District. He then served two terms as the California State Senator representing the 20th District. On December 20, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he had selected Padilla to fill the United States Senate seat of Kamala Harris, who was elected Vice President of the United States. Padilla was sworn into the United States Senate on January 20, 2021.
