Elections in Kenya
Elections in Kenya are held after every five years. This 2022 election will be the third since the promulgation of the 2010 Kenyan constitution. This year less number of presidential candidates have been cleared to run as presidential aspirants. This counts to only Four presidential aspirants. Some of the candidates who were not cleared posted complaints of the Kenyan independent electoral boundaries commission being biased and some said it was a political scheme for them to be eliminated from the race. However, the Kenyan electoral boundaries commission stated that the candidates did not meet the requirement as per the constitution.
What the Kenyan constitution states about elections
According to the 2010 constitution of Kenya, it states the General elections should be held on the second Tuesday of August every fifth year. This is the reason why the elections were scheduled by the IEBC on the 9th of August 2022. In this election, the incumbent president (Uhuru Kenyatta) is not going to run for the third time since the Kenyan constitution allows the present to rule only for two terms. The county governors who have also served two terms are also not eligible to run for the third term.
The Kenyan Electorate System
According to the Kenyan electoral system, the president only wins in the first round of the election if he or she garners over 50% of votes as well as 25% in the 24 counties of the 47 counties. The National assembly consists of 337 members however, a total of 290 members are elected in their constituencies by voting while 47 are nominated. Most of the nominated members of the parliament are usually women.
The senate has 67 members, where 47 are elected by ballot representing 47 counties while parties are assigned 16 seats for women. The youth and the disabled are also assigned two seats each.
There are also ward representatives also known as members of the county Assembly. This is elected by voters at the ward level. There are 1,450 members of the county assembly representing the same number of wards in Kenya.

Will there be violence in the Kenya elections?
Kenya has always been perceived to be a place of violence during general elections. However, President Uhuru Kenyatta has deployed 150,000 security officers in places that are perceived to be violence-prone zone. Kenyans do not wish to go back to times such as 2007 or even 2017 post-election violence. With over 1000 people dying in Kenya in 2007 post-election violence according to UN human rights no single Kenyan ever wants to go back to that black times. Due to fear of election violence, many Kenyans are moving from urban times and main capital cities back to their rural homes in a bid to avoid circumstances that may surround the outcome of an election. This also affects voting since some of them are not registered as voters in their rural homes.
