Zeinab Badawi Biography

Zeinab Badawi is a British-Sudanese journalist and media personality born on 24 November 1959 in Sudan. She is currently worked as a news presenter for world popular news media BBC News on a show Global Questions and Hard Talk. Badawi has worked for various media houses such as ITV Morning News and also co-presented Channel 4 News with Jon Snow.

Zeinab Badawi is a well educated media personality whose education profile is on an excellent level. Badawi attended Hornsey High School for Girls in North London. After the completion of her high school education, she joined St Hilda’s College, Oxford and studied politics, philosophy and Economics (PPE).
She was a member of the Oxford University Broadcasting Society while at oxford college. Badawi furthered her education by joining the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London where she studied for an MA degree in politics and anthropology of the Middle East. She later graduated with distinction in 1989.

Badawi was born and raised by Mohammed-Khair El-Badawi(father) who also worked as an editor for a newspaper in Sudan. She was also known as one of the pre-independence politicians in Sudan. Her father later joined BBC’s Arabic Service after moving to the UK when Zeinab was only two years. Her family still runs Ahfad University – an all-women’s university that was started by her great grandfather great-grandfather Babikir Bedri who pioneered education for girls and women in the capital.

According to Badawi’s statement in an interview, she revealed that most of her family relatives are educated. “When I was growing up it was not uncommon for me to meet aunts and great-aunts who had PhDs from some of the world’s top universities. My grandmother – who would be more than a hundred years old today – could read and write. So I have never understood why anyone would object to female education on any grounds.”

As a presenter for BBC News, she has been a presenter and reporter for Westminster live political programmes. She also worked for BBC Radio for the show, the world Tonight on Radio 4. She was also a regular presenter for BBC World News hour. Before joining BBC News she worked for worked at Yorkshire TV in Leeds.

She presented a 20-part series on Economics fo Channel 4 TV, known as’A Q Question of Economics’, made various research-based work and also worked on local news programmes. The professional journalist also worked for an Independent television news network in London known as ITN.

While at ITN, she worked for a couple of years as a co-presenter on Channel 4 News. She also reported live from Uk and interviewed various members of parliament, including presenting live political programmes.

She was once the presenter for World News Today in 2005 which was formerly known as The World on BBC Four. This was the Uk’s first daily bulleting committed to international news. This programme is today shown on BBC World News channel.

She hosts a HARDtalk show where she has been able to interview famous people such as Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir, in May 2009. Omar Al-Bashir appeared to be the first head of state to be charged with crimes against humanity together with Sadam Husein, who was hanged in 2006.

In 2014 May she was situated in Johannesburg, South Africa where she covered elections held in South Africa on BBC News channel and BBC World News. Badawi has done very well while at BBC News and has also presented on BBC News at Five.

Due to her good work in media industry as well as charitable work, Badawi has won several awards. She was conferred with the title of International TV Personality of the Year’ in the Annual Media Awards, which is usually organised by the association for international broadcasting.

Later, in July 2011 and August 2018, Badawi received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). This honour was awarded in regard to her journalism work. Her contribution to international political journalism received a president’s medal from the British Academy.

Zeinab Badawi has also contributed a lot in terms of charity and she is recognized for such good work. Badawi is the founder of the Africa Medical Partnership Fund (AfriMed). This is one of the organizations whose aim is to help local medical professionals in Africa. She has served at the utmost faith as the adviser at the Foreign Policy Centre and a Council Member of the Overseas Development Institute.

Her good work has also been significant while working as the patron for BBC World Service Trust – the charitable arm of the BBC.

Since 2014, she has also been the chair of the Royal African Society (RAS) as well as a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery beginning in 2004. She was also appointed to the advisory board of the New College of the Humanities. Badawi has also worked with the British Council.
